Upright vs Mac Mouse Fix
Choose Upright if you have a Logitech mouse and want its Logitech-only buttons, such as the top (DPI), gesture or SmartShift button, remapped for free with open-source code. Choose Mac Mouse Fix if your mouse isn't a Logitech, or if what you want most is trackpad-style smooth scrolling and gestures: it works with most mice, costs $2.99 after a 30-day trial, and its older version 2 stays free.

Upright
Upright is a small native menu-bar app that talks to Logitech mice directly over HID++ 2.0, the protocol Logitech's own software uses. That lets it take over buttons generic remappers often can't see, such as the top (DPI), gesture and SmartShift buttons. It adds gestures (a click plus hold-and-move in four directions, five actions per button), per-app profiles, several mice at once, pointer speed (DPI) presets, Easy-Switch from a button, battery alerts at 15% and 5%, and export and import of every mapping. It has no account, no analytics and no telemetry, and nothing is written to the mouse's memory: quit it and the buttons go back to factory behavior.
Honest limits: it works only with Logitech HID++ mice, only the MX Vertical has been verified on real hardware so far (the other catalog models are built from published device data), it needs macOS 13 or later, and it isn't notarized yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first launch.
Mac Mouse Fix
Mac Mouse Fix turns an ordinary mouse into something closer to an Apple trackpad. Hold button 4 or 5 and drag to open Mission Control, switch Spaces, show App Exposé or the desktop; hold button 5 and drag to scroll in any direction with inertia. Its smooth scrolling has High, Regular and Off settings, it can reverse the wheel independently of a trackpad, and buttons can trigger keyboard shortcuts.
It costs $2.99 (plus taxes) after a 30-day trial that only counts the days you actually use it, with no subscription, and a license works on all your Macs. Mac Mouse Fix 2 remains free and runs back to macOS 10.11. The source code is on GitHub under its own MMF License. Its README is upfront that on mice designed for proprietary driver software such as Logitech Options it can't recognize all the buttons at the moment.
Which should you pick?
- Your mouse isn't a Logitech: Mac Mouse Fix. Upright only speaks Logitech's HID++ protocol.
- You mostly want smooth, trackpad-like scrolling and gestures: Mac Mouse Fix. It is the more polished scrolling app; Upright's smooth scrolling is still experimental.
- Your Mac runs macOS 11 or 12, or older: Mac Mouse Fix, since Upright needs macOS 13. On very old systems, Mac Mouse Fix 2 is free.
- You have an MX Master, MX Vertical, Lift or MX Anywhere and want its special buttons back: Upright. It reaches the top (DPI), gesture and SmartShift buttons over HID++, for free.
- You want DPI presets, battery alerts or Easy-Switch on a button: Upright.
- You want MIT-licensed code you can build yourself: Upright.
FAQ
Is Mac Mouse Fix free?
Mac Mouse Fix 2 is free. The current version is free for 30 days of use, then $2.99 plus taxes to own, with no subscription.
Does Mac Mouse Fix work with Logitech mice?
Yes, for most buttons. Its README says that on mice designed for proprietary driver software like Logitech Options it can't recognize all the buttons at the moment. Upright talks to Logitech mice over HID++, so it can divert buttons such as the top (DPI), gesture and SmartShift buttons.
Does Upright work with non-Logitech mice?
No. It only speaks Logitech's HID++ protocol. For other mice, Mac Mouse Fix is a good choice.
Which one is open source?
Upright is open source under the MIT license. Mac Mouse Fix publishes its source code on GitHub under its own MMF License, which sets conditions on publishing apps derived from it.
