Upright vs BetterMouse

Checked 19 October 2026 · Facts from each developer's own site

BetterMouse is the closer replacement for Logi Options+: on supported Logitech mice it sets DPI, onboard profiles, vendor buttons and the MX Master thumb wheel, it also handles supported Logitech keyboards and pairs Unifying and Bolt receivers, for $7.99 once after a 7-day trial. Upright is free and open source and remaps Logitech mouse buttons, gestures and pointer-speed presets without writing to the mouse's memory, but it covers Logitech mice only and has no keyboard support.

Upright

Upright is a small native menu-bar app that talks to Logitech mice directly over HID++ 2.0, the protocol Logitech's own software uses. That lets it take over buttons generic remappers often can't see, such as the top (DPI), gesture and SmartShift buttons. It adds gestures (a click plus hold-and-move in four directions, five actions per button), per-app profiles, several mice at once, pointer speed (DPI) presets, Easy-Switch from a button, battery alerts at 15% and 5%, and export and import of every mapping. It has no account, no analytics and no telemetry, and nothing is written to the mouse's memory: quit it and the buttons go back to factory behavior.

Honest limits: it works only with Logitech HID++ mice, only the MX Vertical has been verified on real hardware so far (the other catalog models are built from published device data), it needs macOS 13 or later, and it isn't notarized yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first launch.

BetterMouse

BetterMouse describes itself as a utility for smooth scrolling, cursor speed control and mouse and keyboard bindings, built to replace heavier drivers like Logitech Options. For supported Logitech mice it goes into the hardware: DPI, onboard profiles, vendor-defined buttons and the MX Master thumb wheel, plus a Unifying and Bolt receiver pairing tool. It also maps keys on supported Logitech keyboards and sets their backlight, Fn inversion and onboard profiles.

Beyond Logitech, it offers configurable smooth scrolling, separate cursor speed and acceleration, mapping for clicks, drags, holds and hold-scroll, and per-app exceptions. It is Apple-notarized, installs no extensions, drivers or agents, and needs no registration. It costs $7.99 once after a 7-day trial with full functionality, with five reusable activations per license, and needs macOS 12.0 or later.

Which should you pick?

  • You want the most Logitech hardware control without Logi Options+: BetterMouse. Onboard profiles, the MX Master thumb wheel and keyboard settings are things Upright doesn't do.
  • You also have a Logitech keyboard, or need to pair a Unifying or Bolt receiver: BetterMouse.
  • You want a notarized app with polished smooth scrolling, and $7.99 is fine: BetterMouse.
  • You want it free and open source: Upright, under the MIT license.
  • You're on an Intel Mac: Upright runs on Apple silicon and Intel; BetterMouse's download section lists Apple silicon.
  • You want nothing written to the mouse's memory: Upright only borrows buttons while it runs, and power-cycling the mouse restores factory behavior.

FAQ

How much does BetterMouse cost?

$7.99 as a one-time purchase after a 7-day free trial with full functionality. Each license includes five reusable activations.

Which one goes deeper on Logitech hardware?

BetterMouse. On supported Logitech mice it sets DPI, onboard profiles, vendor-defined buttons and the MX Master thumb wheel, and it supports some Logitech keyboards. Upright diverts vendor buttons and sets pointer speed, but writes nothing to the mouse's memory.

Does Upright support Logitech keyboards?

No. Upright is for Logitech mice only and never opens keyboards.

Is BetterMouse open source?

Its site offers no source code. Upright is open source under the MIT license, and you can build it yourself with Xcode.
